Accessible Non-Profit WordPress Development

The Period Purse – Accessible Bilingual WordPress Website

A fully accessible, bilingual, modular WordPress website created for The Period Purse with an AODA AA–compliant implementation and custom language switching.

The Period Purse accessible bilingual WordPress website

I partnered with a leading non-profit marketing company to create a fully accessible and fully bilingual WordPress website for The Period Purse.

The website was developed to comply with Ontario's AODA AA accessibility standard. Bilingual functionality was implemented through a custom language switcher, allowing the client to avoid the recurring cost of a paid multilingual plugin.

The site was also designed as a fully modular content-management system. Administrators can add, modify, repeat, reorder, or delete pre-designed modules without writing HTML.

The content system was built around reusable, pre-designed modules rather than fixed page templates or a free-form page builder. Administrators can choose the modules they need, enter the content, and arrange the page in the order that makes sense.

Each module can be added, modified, repeated, reordered, or removed. This gives the client substantial control over the website while preserving the approved design and preventing administrators from needing to work with HTML.

The result is an administration experience that is easy to use, powerful, and highly customizable without requiring technical knowledge for normal content updates.

Accessibility was a core project requirement rather than a feature added after the visual design was complete. The finished website was developed to meet Ontario's AODA AA standard and to provide an accessible experience across its public content.

The entire site was also implemented in two languages. A custom language switcher was created specifically for the website, providing the required bilingual experience without forcing the non-profit to purchase and maintain a paid multilingual plugin.

The project combined custom WordPress development, responsive front-end implementation, modular content management, bilingual functionality, accessibility compliance, and Airtable integration in one maintainable platform.

The development approach kept the website flexible for future content needs while making routine administration straightforward for the client's team.
